High School
"What
people remember most about her high school days was the 1986 game pitting
Fernandez, a freshman, against Gahr High's De De Weiman. The two
dueled for 21 scoreless innings until the game was suspended for
darkness. The next day, they returned to finish up, pitching another
eight innings until Fernandez scored the winning and only run.
Weiman has kept a scrapbook of that marathon game and the most
unforgettable photo from it captures a tearful Weiman and Kelly Inouye
(Fernandez's catcher at UCLA) hugging at home plate, while Fernandez and
her teammates are gleefully celebrating a few feet away. But Weiman
also remembers Fernandez's grace in victory, "Lisa came and hugged me
and said, 'There's no winner or loser here.'"
